version 6 alpha update 1

Early feedback on version 6 has been good and we are opening a public alpha test.

At this time version 6 supports multiplex audio (up to 3 microphones), text chat, and some administrative controls.  The presentation features such as whiteboard and screencasting are still under development in the new version, as are many other features currently available in the production version.

Please try it out, and feel free to send feedback to support@ivocalize.com with "v6 alpha" in the subject line.  All feedback will be read, however, we may be unable to respond to your email.

To get started, visit http://v6.ivocalize.net/signup and log in to create an account.

v6 alpha

2010 is almost at a close, and we have been quite busy this past year putting together a ground-up rewrite of the iVocalize web conference system.

Among the big changes are an all-new HTML5 user interface, an integrated control panel, password-free account management and support for multiple people speaking at the same time.

We think there are way too many passwords to remember these days, so we've completely removed them from our system. In version 6, you can sign in using your existing Google, Yahoo or Facebook account.

iVocalize version 6 runs inside of your browser rather than in a standalone application. We support Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera running on Windows, Mac or Linux. Mobile devices like Android and iOS are planned after the final v6 release.

For now, this is an alpha release to test out the new technology platform. It is not for general consumption. "Alpha" means that many features are incomplete or missing. If you are interested, and willing to provide detailed feedback on your experience using the system, then we want to hear from you to get you set up with a test account.

Contact us at support@ivocalize.com with "v6 alpha" in the subject line. Tell us about your current and intended use of iVocalize and your level of technical proficiency. We may be unable to respond to everyone, but if you are selected to participate, you will hear back from us with instructions and next steps.

Happy Holidays from iVocalize

Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1

With the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1 for OS 10.6.2, Apple corrected the problem preventing applications from selecting their desired java version, but introduced a new bug causing Snow Leopard to ignore the user-selected preferred java version under /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.

We have updated iVocalize to take advantage of the application's ability to select the Java version, and iVocalize now automatically selects Java SE 6 32-bit when running on OS 10.6.2, so customization of the Java Preferences is no longer needed.

iVocalize on Leopard (10.5) requires J2SE 5.0 32-bit (shown here) which is the default configuration.

Snow Leopard + Java

With the release of OS 10.6, Apple has changed the default Java version from 32-bit to 64-bit. Unfortunately, they also included a bug preventing applications from being able to select the 32-bit version.

Since iVocalize for Mac currently requires the 32-bit JVM, Snow Leopard users will need to change the default Java back to 32-bit as described here.

When uploading PowerPoint and OpenDocument presentations to your conference room, the most recent uploads are saved in a server-side cache for instant loading in future conferences. The number of recent presentations stored in the cache has been raised from 5 to 10.

Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4

The latest Java update for the Mac, Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4, broke the association between JNLP files and Java Web Start.

If a JNLP file opens in Text Edit instead of launching Java, take the following actions to restore the proper association so that Java Web Start applications launch correctly:
  1. Save the text file to your desktop with a jnlp file extension, e.g. RoomName.jnlp
  2. Right click the JNLP file and select Open With -> Other
  3. In the Choose Application window, select: /System/Library/CoreServices/Java Web Start.app .
  4. Check the box for Always Open With then click the Open button
